Christmas Tree Hunt {2013}

For Christmas this year, our little family tried something new.  Jason and I really wanted the kids to have at least one childhood Christmas with a real tree, so we got one this afternoon.  As a little girl, my family only had one once, but I still remember decorating it.  To this day, I still giggle when I think about how my mom trimmed the top few branches.  We ended up with more of a Christmas bush. ha!   Jason has many great childhood memories of searching out the perfect tree on his step Grandpa's land.  So, that's where we headed to find ours.  The kiddos were all so excited.  Here they are on the way there.

We got to Grandma and Papa's house and started looking at the front of their property for the perfect tree.

Our little family tree hunting.

My Payton looking so pretty!

We had so many trees to choose from!

After searching for a short while, Papa got home and joined us.  The kiddos were even more excited when he came along!  It wasn't long after Papa joined in on the fun, that we found our tree. Then, Karsyn found a tree that she really wanted.  She used her big blue eyes to help persuade Daddy.  Here she is in the act.

Look into her eyes!

Payton had asked if the girls could have a tree in their room earlier in the day.  She really wanted this one too. When we said yes,  Payton and Karsyn were both super excited!!!

Close by, Evan found a small tree with a blueish hue that he wanted for his room.  Since we found all of our trees, we started to walk over to Papa's truck to get loppers, an axe, and a saw.  On the walk, Daddy spotted deer tracks.

The girls were all very interested.  Evan was in a hurry to get to the truck.

Karsyn showed us that she was a little country girl.  It made her heart happy to run through the trees.  She was even more happy when she was holding her Papa's hand.

When Daddy cut the tree down, the kiddos all giggled with excitement. I have to admit, I did too.  Addi's giggle box was turned completely upside down. She couldn't stop laughing.  It was so cute!

Timber!!!

Evan cut down his tree next.  Here he is with his prize!

The girls all gathered around as Payton cut the tree for their room down.

Payton was working so hard!!!

Addi and Karsyn gave Payton lots of instructions.

Daddy and Papa worked hard to get our tree tied to the top of our SUV.  While they were taking care of business, Addi and Karsyn thought they found more deer tracks.  I think it was an excuse to play in the dirt. ha!

After we got our tree, Grandma invited us inside for hot chocolate and cookies.  Yummy!!!

By the time that we got home, it was close to bedtime.  We'll be decorating our tree tomorrow night. After Christmas, we'll know if having a real tree will be our new tradition.  But I can tell you, hunting for the perfect Christmas tree is so much fun!  We all enjoyed it so much!  Thank you so much Grandma and Papa for the tree, cookies and hot chocolate.

What is your family's annual Christmas tree tradition?

  1. How fun! My family has never had a real tree... but my in-laws do. Looks like a great adventure for the kiddos!

  2. What a lovely thing to do with your family. We always had trees in our bedrooms growing up and it was so special. How nice your kids get to experience that this year!

Last year was the first time we ever got a tree for our family. We went to a tree farm near our house and our plan is to go again this year. We just have to wait a couple of weeks until we get back from Saskatchewan.

When I was growing up we always cut down a live tree from my dad's tree farm. It was an awesome childhood memory that I want to continue with our kids. We've never had an artificial tree and I feel very strongly that we won't ever just because my dad grew them!

  3. Well, with a forester for a husband, you can imagine that we will likely always have a real tree. We could drive a couple of hours to cut down our own tree in the mountains where they grow Frasier firs (a lot of the White House's trees come from there). We've done that once before, but we have a local place here that Eddie trust to take good care of the trees they cut (the owners remember him every year now) and so we go as soon as they get the first trees in for the season right after cutting (right after Thanksgiving) and pick our tree out. It is a fun little farm, and we don't have to drive very far. Of course, the trees aren't free which does take a little "fun" out of it, but that's the way it is. Haha! I love these memories you all made. That's what it is all about. I love that Payton was all dressed up and that she worked so hard to cut down the girls' tree without "breaking a sweat" or messing up her hair. Such a little lady! :-)
