Two summers ago, our little family discovered the joy of berry pickin'. You can read all about our first trip to the berry farm here. We had so much fun that we later visited the farm with Nana and Papa. They quickly became big fans of berry picking too. Last summer the berry season was cut short due to a cooler than normal Spring and a hotter than normal Summer. It was a major summer bummer that we weren't able to go. The kiddos were so excited when I told them that we were going this week. The weather was perfect for picking yesterday. We got up early to to get to the farm. When we got there, we picked up our buckets and then we got out in the field. I loved seeing my little family work together.
Payton is a hard workin', blueberry pickin' kind of girl. She is a self proclaimed blueberry expert. Her specialty is finding the biggest of blueberries.
Evan isn't afraid to get down and dirty. He pops a squat and gets the berries at the base of the plant. Most pickers seem to overlook the berries at the bottom. Being color blind, Evan has a little trouble noticing the variations in the shades of blue. We had to toss a few of his berries, but he understood. His sister very kindly tried to explain to Evan what to look for. However, unlike berry picking, explaining colors to someone who does not see them the same way is a fruitless task.
Addi loves berry pickin'. She gets so excited when she sees a plant that has plenty of berries. It's so cute. She's quite thorough!
This was our first trip to the farm where Karsyn was big enough to pick berries. Last time, she decided that she was quality control and had a big purple smile. Karsyn learned so quickly which berries were ripe. She and Addi were both eye level to the plants, so they both found bunches of great blueberries.
Watching Jason pick berries with our kiddos is one of my most favorite of things.
Here's a Daddy handful and a Karsyn handful of berries.
We picked 4 big blue bucketfuls of blueberries. The blackberries weren't quite ripe yet, otherwise, we'd have some of those as well. We did the share berry program, so our little family kept 1/3 of what we picked for free. The farm kept the other 2/3 to sell at the farmer's market.
After leaving the berry farm, the kiddos wanted to cash in their Krispy Kreme coupons they earned through the library. It was our first time to ever go inside. We've only been a few times before and we've always used the drive thru. The kiddos LOVED watching the donuts cook.
We had a great time and that was only part of our day! I'll fill you in on the rest later. =)

During our rare visits to Virginia, we usually are able to pick raspberries....yum!
ReplyDeleteCute pictures! I'm glad you had a fun day!
ReplyDeleteOkay, you just wrote about some of my favorite things...berry picking and Krispy Kreme...in one post. That is awesome! And yes, you definitely must get the experience of going inside for doughnuts. My kids love watching the doughnuts being made. :-)
ReplyDeleteI really like the pictures of Jason picking berries with the kids. I love all pictures of dads doing everyday things with their kids. It's not just about dads wrestling or throwing baseballs to their kids. (Does this even make sense?!?!)
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a Krispy Kreme here but I don't know if we do anymore. I will have to check that out. And this post reminds me that I should get our kids out for some strawberry picking. I just don't know if they would be more "quality control" than help! Ha!
