Our preschool does a unit based curriculum. All of the units are theme based and last two weeks (we do have a couple that last a little more or a little less.) In our current unit, we are learning about community helpers. It's been really fun teaching all about police officers, nurses, doctors, dentists, teachers, librarians, preachers, etc. Today we focused on firefighters. For early morning play time, the kids had a special extra toy in the play area. Karsyn LOVED this pop up fire truck!
Then, it was time to head to class. Our class did a fun firefighter project.
After we finished our projects, we had special visitors. Three of our local firefighters came to talk to the kids.
The kids loved listening to the firefighters, but they could not wait to go see the truck! Karsyn was the most excited. She was the first to jump up into the firefighters arms to take a look around.
The firefighters left, but they gave each of our students a special gift. Karsyn loved her hat!
It was a really fun day for all of the kids at the school. It was a little crazy for us teachers. We get to do it all again tomorrow. =)

That looks like a ton of fun for the kids and a lot of work for the teachers :) As a parent, I just want to say that I really appreciate when Rachel's teachers make learning more fun and relevant with stuff like this though.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, the kids really learn so much. Plus, it's really fun for them. The first day was just kind of crazy.
DeleteI love the preschool fun. I got a little taste of Brody's day at preschool on Monday because I hung out with him so I could insure we got decent school pictures. Last year's weren't great because he was crying and wouldn't smile. Do you think the shorter preschool day works well? I picked Brody's school because I liked that they were there a little longer than other ones. They just go from 9:00 to 12:30 but get to eat lunch there. I think eating lunch there has really helped teach him more independence. They encourage them to get their own lunch boxes, unzip and open them by themselves. Brody's zipper on his is always a little tight so he has to work hard to get it. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOur school goes from 8:30 to 11:15. The threes go two days a week. The fours go Mon-Thur. I like the half days. It give us plenty of time to spend together at home. I think it's great that Brody's school does lunch. Those are some important skills. It was kind of hard the first few weeks of school teaching my class that at snack time they have to clean up their trash and empty out their cups. We haven't moved on to opening our own snacks yet though. That will be soon.
