Monday when I picked Evan up from school, I could tell before he even got in the van that he felt bad. He got in and told me that he had a sore throat. Later in the evening when Jason got off work, I took Evan to Urgent Care while Daddy stayed home with the girls. We don't have an Urgent Care in our little town, so we drove into Tulsa. The doctor didn't think he had strep at first, but his test came back positive. Luckily, we caught it really early. The doctor called his RX into our local pharmacy. I took Evan out for ice cream, dropped him off with Daddy, and got to our pharmacy about an hour after it was called in. It wasn't ready! I had to wait for over an hour to get his medicine. I got home, gave Evan his medicine, and then determined that our dishwasher soap wasn't working so well. So, out to the store I went again. It was exhausting!
Tuesday, we kept Evan home from school. It worked out that Jason was able to stay home with him, until Karsyn and I came home from school. Grandma met the girls for dance class. I wrote her a note telling her which sister had to be in what studio, in what type and size shoes, and what time. It ended up being a page long. After Evan and I dropped the girls off to Grandma, we got a very scary phone call. Someone at the middle school tested positive for Whooping Cough. A crew was called in to sanitize the school. We were told as long as our students had the series of immunizations, that they would be fine.
By Wednesday, the Whooping Cough news had made it's way to the different Tulsa TV stations. News crews were at the middle school. The camera crew took lots of different shots all over the school and Evan's name was in one of the camera shots that made it's way on the news. Evan thought that was awesome. =) It turns out, that Evan's first period teacher had been diagnosed with Whooping Cough. Just to ease my mama mind, I called our pediatrician's office to make sure that Evan would be okay. They told me that Evan had missed his last shot in the series. My heart dropped to my stomach. When it comes to the kids' health, I'm very diligent. I couldn't believe that I would let something like this lapse. I compared my records with theirs and it turns out that Evan did have all of his immunizations. For reasons I don't fully remember, I took him into the doctor that Jason and I see for his last set of shots. Figuring that out and knowing that Evan wasn't at risk was a huge relief. Wednesday, I also had to make a decision that I didn't want to make, but that I knew was coming. I pulled Addi and Payton out of their gymnastics class. For Addi, dance, gymnastics, and going to a new school has just been too much. She's been really tired and very grumpy. Something had to give! That was tough, because Addi loves gymnastics. Payton, on the other hand, got to the point where she just lost interest. That made it much easier. Karsyn will still take her Pre-K class and I imagine that she will next year too.
By Thursday, I was a worn out and sick mama. I am certain being hacked on in the pharmacy for over an hour on Monday night contributed to that. My voice was (and still is) very squeaky and crackly. It made teaching preschool crazy! Between me having no voice, having a police officer visit (it's community helper week), and it being a rainy day, my class was all out of sorts. Later that evening, my own children were all kinds of out of sorts too.
The kiddos being out of sorts continued into Friday. Aye, aye, aye! It was a rough day. Arguing kids, a big fit, and back talking...yuck! It's not that this never happens, but it sure isn't the normal. Even more outside of the normal, it stormed all day and we had an earthquake. Karsyn and I were in Wal-Mart when we heard the earth start shaking. Oklahoma isn't normally known for having earthquakes, but over the last couple years we've had several. I've only felt movement from one, had a picture frame fall down from another, but we've been able to hear most of them. The earth makes a really creepy, deep, thunder like sounds when it shakes. Turns out yesterday's quake was a 4.3.
Next week, the kiddos and I only have 2 days of school and then it's Fall Break. Surely, it will be better.

I am so sorry that you had such a horrible week, Tracy! However, I am glad that you are all safe and hopefully on the road to recovery from the earthquake and strep throat. I hope that next week is much better. It sounds like Fall Break is at a perfect time! :) Lana
ReplyDeleteThanks Lana! Fall Break did come at a perfect time for us. It was nice to rest after that crazy week.
DeleteAwww...I hope things get easier soon!
ReplyDeleteOn this Monday, Lance is going for a "trial run" at a local gymnastics place. If he likes it, he will either go once or twice a week. It was the only thing I could think of to help fill up some of our time in the afternoons. I really hope he likes it, but if it gets to be too much for us or if he loses interest, I'll be like you and just say enough is enough.
Talk to you soon dear!
Thanks Kelly! I'm sure that Lance will love gymnastics. I can't wait to see what he thinks of it.
DeleteI'm so sorry you had such a rough week Tracy. I hope this week has been going better for you and that everyone is "into sorts" and feeling healthy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Natasha!
DeleteBrody's class teacher said they had some whooping cough cases this month. He had started having a little cough that week, and we did keep him home one day because he ran a low grade fever. He seemed to get better though. This week, he actually got a stomach bug after school on Monday and wasn't feeling well through Tuesday although he never ran a fever. Ugh, it is just sick season I guess. Hopefully, we have seen the worst of it! And yikes to the earthquake! I am actually scared of those and glad we don't really get them here!
ReplyDeleteOh sick season is just no fun at all! So far for us, it has passed quickly. Earthquakes are just creepy. I never thought it would be something we dealt with here. Aren't tornadoes enough?
